Home What We Treat Patterns of Healing

Patterns of Healing

Individuals tend to respond to treatments in individualized ways. Some factors that may influence this include age, compliance with taking prescribed medications, willingness to make dietary and lifestyle changes, severity of symptoms, inherited factors, health status, and the length of time that the individual has had the condition. In truth there are probably hundreds, or even thousands, of other variables that influence our health on a daily basis. In general, however, the sooner you seek treatment, the more mild the condition, the better your health, and the more compliant you are with the treatment plan, the faster you will recover. On the other hand, the longer you have had a condition, the more severe it is, the worse your health is, and the less compliant you are, the the slower the condition will change and the longer it will take to resolve. Even though the healing process is always unique to the specific case, there are a some patterns of healing that are more common than others.

The patient steadily improves over time.
Treatments tend to build on each other, with the overall effects getting stronger and stronger over time. You would think this would mean that most individuals would tend to get better and better steadily over time. In an ideal world everyone would respond like this, but this is actually one of the least common patterns of healing. As it turns out, because no one is a perfect textbook case and because there are so many variables that can effect our health, other patterns are far more common.

Symptoms get a little worse before they get better.
This happens occasionally in the case of pain, where things are being released or opened during the treatment process. In this case, symptoms will usually get worse either later that day or the next day. Fortunately, as the symptoms clear up, the patient will usually feel much better. Sometimes symptoms may also get worse if there is a condition that requires elimination, like a rash that needs to be expressed before it can heal. This is referred to as a healing crisis and is considered to be a normal part of the process.

There is no change or very little change at first, followed by an acceleration of the healing process.
This is a very common pattern of healing in chronic conditions, especially in ones that have been around for years or decades. Chronic conditions are sort of like feedback loops; they have their own momentum and roll along in a continuous cycle of self-perpetuation. In order to treat then effectively you must first break the cycle. Only then can you begin to reverse it. Usually patients who have chronic conditions will notice some sort of change at first but it will be subtle or vague. Within just two or three treatments the positive effects become more clear and the patient starts to have noticeable symptomatic relief. Over time the healing accelerates and the condition resolves.

The condition never completely resolves but symptoms are manageable with periodic treatments.
Sometimes people have the type of condition that cannot ever be completely resolved. Maybe they were born with some sort of congenital condition or maybe they had a traumatic injury with extensive tissue damage. Often these types of individuals have chronic symptoms, like pain, and they struggle on a daily basis to keep them under control. Fortunately, these people can often manage their symptoms much better with periodic treatments. Some opt to come on a a regular basis for preventive treatments, say once per month, while others may come in only when their symptoms flare up.

The patient gets better in steps, with periods of positive change alternating with periods of no change.
This is another very common pattern of healing. Just as health conditions often develop in a series of steps or phases, recovery and reversal of these conditions can follow the same pattern. Its sort of like peeling back the layers of an onion or like winding a clock backward over time: more recent symptoms will clear up before older ones, and the original root condition will slowly reveal itself again before it is resolved.

There is no response to the treatments.
This is the most rare of all the responses. Though individuals tend to respond in individualized ways, there is typically some kind of notable positive improvement over time. We find that when there is no response to treatment it is often the type of condition that has not responded well to anything else. Other factors that can cause this include lack of compliance with the treatment plan, inaccurate diagnosis, incorrect treatment, or when the patient's health is very poor. When there is no response it is very important to re-evaluate the diagnosis, review the treatment plan and consider other types of therapies.
