Gua Sha: Jade and Horn Massage Tools
In gua sha an oil is applied to the skin and a specialized tool, typically made of jade or bone, is rubbed over the area. Gua sha feels really good and is universally liked. I find it to be amazingly effective at breaking up knots anywhere in the body, especially in the neck and shoulder area. This technique combs out the muscle fibers, stretches the soft tissues, and pushes through blockages and constrictions to open the channels. It excels at breaking up stubborn knots and scar tissue, realigning and lengthening muscle fibers and connective tissue, and improving the flow of chi and blood. I often include gua sha in my acupuncture sessions, or combine it with other traditional therapies like tui na (massage), zhi ya (acupressure), ba guan (fire cupping), or topical oils and patches for pain.
